lexical / word aversion
Jul. 15th, 2008 10:53 pmthis article got me to thinkin' about the phenomenon of people hating words. it's well-documented that many people dislike the words "moist" and "panties" -- but what is it about those words that everyone dislikes? what is it about any word that someone dislikes? is it the connotation? (personally, when i picture panties, i picture big white ol' granny panties, and while i normally enjoy picturing your average lady in their underwear, granny panties i just can't do.) is it the actual sounds of the word itself, the "oy" in the middle of "moist" or the "tees" at the end of "panties"?
i hate the word "poop" more than any word in the english language, with "poo" a close second.
so. tell me. what word(s) don't you like? why?
